UW-Madison alums serving on new Wisconsin Teachers of the Year Council

March 04, 2013

Three UW-Madison alumnae who have earned statewide recognition for leadership and innovation will be sharing their teaching expertise on a newly appointed Wisconsin Teachers of the Year Council.

“We are empowering teachers to have a say about policies that impact their classrooms and students,” State Superintendent Tony Evers says in this news release announcing the council. “This council will provide input on emerging issues in education and guidance to recruit talented individuals to the teaching profession. Additionally, we are building a network of exemplary educators.”

The council is made up of 19 individuals who have earned Teacher of the Year recognition since 2007.

Among those on the panel are UW-Madison School of Education alumnae: Linda Bergh (BS ’72, MS ’98, TCH 98), the 2013 Special Services Teacher of the Year who works at the DeForest School District’s Eagle Point Elementary School; Rachel Rydzewski (BSE ’05, TCH ’05), the 2010 Middle/Junior Teacher of the Year who works at Waunakee Middle School; and Sandra Kowalczyk (TCH ’05), the 2009 Middle/Junior Teacher of the Year who works at the Sun Prairie Area School District’s Patrick Marsh Middle School.

The panel held its first meeting Monday in Madison, an event that was to include briefings on the 2013-15 state budget, statewide initiatives on educator effectiveness, and implementation of the Common Core State Standards. The council is expected to hold two additional meetings this year and to be an ongoing advisory panel to provide direct feedback to the state superintendent and the Department of Public Instruction.
