School of Education alum Willems featured by On Wisconsin magazine

September 04, 2017

School of Education alumna Dee Willems was recently featured in the fall issue of On Wisconsin magazine, the UW-Madison alumni publication.

WillemWillems became the UW Marching Band’s first woman drum major in 1989.

“I figured if it was going to happen eventually, it might as well be me,” says Willems.

Willems earned her undergraduate degree in Spanish Education in 1990 and a master’s from the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 1996.

On Wisconsin reports: “Today, Willems teaches middle-school Spanish in Wisconsin Rapids, and is grateful for the on-field skills she gained that remain relevant in the classroom: how to work with a wide variety of personalities and “how to [use] a commanding voice … to get a roomful of people’s attention when they’re misbehaving.”
