Alum Eckes named president of the Education Law Association

December 04, 2017
UW-Madison alumna Suzanne Eckes was recently named the President of the Education Law Association (ELA).

Eckes earned a Ph.D. from the School of Education's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis in 2002, and is now a professor at Indiana University Bloomington.

The ELA's mission is to help scholars and practitioners collaborate and inform educational policy to positively affect students, faculty and administrators. A press release from Indiana University states one of Eckes' long-term goals in the position is to bring knowledge of education law to the forefront of the ELA's work with groups that would benefit the most.

“For example, if teachers had a basic understanding of legal issues, it is my belief that sometimes lengthy and expensive litigation could be avoided. More importantly, when teachers are equipped with a better understanding of state, federal and constitutional law they will be able to better advocate for themselves and their students,” Eckes said in the press release.
