Alum Charleston to receive NASAP’s Benjamin L. Perry Professional Award

UW-Madison alumnus LaVar Charleston will be recognized by the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals with the organization’s Benjamin L. Perry Professional Award. 

This award honors outstanding service and contributions to the field of student affairs.

Charleston in July was named assistant vice chancellor of student diversity, engagement and success at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He previously worked as assistant director and a senior research associate at Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB) at UW-Madison and served as the coordinator for the lab’s research and evaluation division.

Charleston is an alumnus of the UW-Madison School of Education, having earned his Ph.D. (2010) and master’s (2007) degrees in educational leadership and policy analysis, with a concentration in higher, postsecondary and continuing education.

Charleston will be recognized Feb. 17 during the closing banquet of the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals’ 64th Annual Conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Benjamin L. Perry Professional Award was established to honor the founding member and former NASAP president whose work inspired numerous young professionals to pursue student affairs as a career.
