Goldberg receives Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy’s 50th Anniversary Research Grant

August 14, 2018

UW-Madison’s Simon Goldberg was awarded the Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy’s 50th Anniversary Research Grant.

The award provides $30,000 in funding and will support Goldberg’s research proposal, “Why do some therapists get better outcomes? Correlates of therapist effects in naturalistic psychotherapy.”

Goldberg received his Ph.D. from the Department of Counseling Psychology in 2017 and is an incoming faculty member with the department.

He was honored Aug. 10 at the annual awards ceremony held during the 2018 American Psychological Association’s annual convention in San Francisco.

Goldberg’s research focuses on factors that are common across psychotherapies that contribute to beneficial outcomes for patients. The grant funding will involve assessing therapist characteristics that may predict superior performance, such as better patient outcomes.

Goldberg explains that his research team will recruit a sample of therapists from naturalistic psychotherapy settings where patient outcomes are currently being tracked. Therapists will complete a battery of self-report and non-self-report measures (neuropsychological and performance tasks) assessing theoretically relevant traits such as interpersonal skill, empathy and multicultural competence.

Goldberg will then evaluate whether these therapist characteristics are associated with better outcomes for patients.
