Citizen Sociolinguistics is the study of the world of language by everyday people who use language (anyone!). Betsy Rymes will discuss how ways of speaking connect to social value by drawing on the internet and daily news where “Citizen Sociolinguists” speak with authority and a wealth of sociolinguistic knowledge.

Hand-crafted pieces of art will be for sale, including ornaments. There will also be a unique event with the Mad Gaffers where participants can be a part of blowing their own glass ornament for $45. All proceeds from the holiday sale will go towards supporting local artists, students and the UW-Madison's Art Department's research and artwork.

A special recognition ceremony for Ph.D. & MFA candidates prior to the university’s Commencement program. Graduates will be individually recognized and have their hood bestowed by their advisors. The event includes complimentary hors d'oeuvres, cake, and punch.
