Rob Warren's research focuses on social inequality, education, health disparities and demography. His current research project involves using data from the High School & Beyond study (with Chandra Muller and Eric Grodsky) to provide leverage in understanding the roles of education, cognitive, and non-cognitive skills, and ascribed attributes in shaping, work, health, and well-being at midlife.

A second project with Sarah Flood is seeking to integrate and link data from the Current Population Survey in order to develop integrated data, dissemination software, and associated metadata that will make longitudinal analyses of CPS data radically easier. He is also the Editor of Sociology of Education.
