UW-Madison alum DeCubellis leading child protection system reform in Minnesota

April 09, 2017
UW-Madison alumna Jennifer DeCubellis was featured by the StarTribune about her efforts leading a reform of Minnesota's child protection system.

DeCubellis received her undergraduate degree in special education from the School of Education in 1992.

Now, she's planning a $13 million overhaul of the child protection system in Hennepin County after taking over the top human services role one year ago. DeCubellis wants to focus on preventing abuse rather than waiting until after it happens to act.

DeCubellis told the StarTribune that a new model will connect families with resources earlier with problems like mental health or employment. This model will hopefully both prevent abuse and keep children safe and with their parents. The model could also combat rising costs by reducing child protection reports and out-of-home placements.

“We want to flip the system; it’s ambitious,” she tells the StarTribune. “This is a complex system, so it’s going to take complex solutions to solve it.”
