Alumnus Nauman's artwork, career featured by New York Times

June 20, 2018

UW-Madison alumnus Bruce Nauman's artwork was featured in an article from the New York Times headlined, "Doing Justice to the Art of Bruce Nauman."

Nauman earned his undergraduate degree from the School of Education’s Art Department in 1964, and then graduated with a master of fine arts from University of California, Davis, in 1966.

The article details a new retrospective exhibit that opened in March at the Schaulager museum in Basel, Switzerland, titled "Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts." The exhibit displays 170 pieces of art of a wide variety, "from neon to drawings and sculptures to sound installations, videos, holograms and 3D imagery."

The exhibit explores five decades of Nauman's career.

“There are artists who make good work throughout their career, but good isn’t great,” curator Kathy Halbreich told the New York Times. “Bruce makes great art from graduate school to yesterday."

“For a curator, the biggest trauma in making a Bruce Nauman exhibition is having to leave things out,” Halbreich added. “There are many more Bruce Nauman exhibitions to be made.”
