Hillman featured in Inside Higher Ed report on FAFSA completion requirements

July 19, 2019

UW-Madison’s Nick Hillman was featured in an Insider Higher Ed report about new state laws requiring the completion of the the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

Hillman is an associate professor with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA), and is the director of UW-Madison’s Student Success through Applied Research Lab (SSTAR). He is also a faculty affiliate of the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE). Hillman's research focuses on federal student aid, state funding models, and educational opportunity.

The article focuses on Texas, which became the second state to require FAFSA completion.

Hillman tells Inside Higher Ed that some states, like Colorado, have begun sharing FAFSA completion records with high school counselors. With few states seriously scaling up their student aid programs, boosting FAFSA completion may be the most effective way to get more financial support to college students who need it, he said.

Research strongly suggests more financial aid can lead to improvements in graduation rates and other outcomes.

“I prefer states do this over financial literacy requirements,” Hillman tells Inside Higher Ed. “There’s a lot of good evidence behind this.”
