UW-Madison’s Fuller receives Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship

UW-Madison’s Regina Fuller was recently awarded a prestigious Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship.

These fellowships are administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards, according to the National Academies website, are “made to individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.”

Fuller is a doctoral student with the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy Studies.

“It is exciting to be a part of the Ford Foundation family and join a pipeline of the nation's top scholars of color who are leading in their respective fields and committed to diversifying the American professoriate,” says Fuller. “As an undergraduate student, I had very few professors who shared my background as a first-generation African-American college student; consequently I never imagined a future in the academy. I did have one African-American professor, Dr. Camille Bethea, who mentored me and inspired me to pursue postgraduate education.”

Fuller says she plans to use the fellowship to support her graduate studies and to conduct dissertation research on youth and sexual education in Ghana.

“In my career, I hope to inspire college students through my teaching and research on youth in Africa,” says Fuller.
