UW-Madison's Garcia featured in Isthmus for artwork on immigration

October 12, 2017
UW-Madison's J. Leigh Garcia was featured in the Isthmus newspaper for her artwork in conversation with immigration.

Garcia is currently pursuing her master of fine arts degree through the School of Education's Art Department.

Garcia's work is one half of the Overture Center's "¿Quiénes somos? (Who Are We?)" exhibition. As a Houston native and a descendant of grandparents who crossed the border illegally in the 1940s, she creates images that explore and call attention to issues that affect undocumented immigrants.

“Every day, I’m impacted by (my grandparents’) decision to be here. I’m trying to use my privilege as an educated, half-white woman to stick up for (immigrants)," Garcia told Isthmus.

The "¿Quiénes somos? (Who Are We?)" exhibition will be on display in the Overture Center's Rotunda Lobby Gallery through Oct. 15.
