MMoCA displaying Teixeira's solo exhibit examining immigration, belonging and exile

February 12, 2018
The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is presenting a solo exhibition by UW-Madison's José Carlos Teixeira through May 20 in the Imprint Gallery.

Teixeira is a faculty member with the School of Education's Art Department.

In the exhibit, Teixeira explores themes of the complexities of immigration, belonging and exile. Titled "José Carlos Teixeira: ON EXILE," the work is a two-part exhibition featuring video essays.

Teixeira's art involves the concept of "otherness," and reverses the human tendency toward othering people different from themselves by humanizing members of marginalized communities. The first part of the film, "ON EXILE: Fragments in search of meaning (2016)," focuses on individuals with mental illness, and the second, "ON EXILE: Elsewhere within here (2017)," focuses on Muslim refugees in the United States.
