Sullivan documents 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui' from first reading through opening night

March 08, 2018

UW-Madison's Michael Sullivan has been documenting the Department of Theatre and Drama's production of "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui," from early rehearsals through last week's opening night.

Sullivan is an academic advisor in the Education Academic Services office in the School of Education, and is a Madison-based photographer.

"The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" was written in 1941 by Bertlolt Brecht, and is a satirical allegory of Adolph Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s set in Chicago.

"I believe in using art to censure the political establishment in order to bring about change," Sullivan writes about his project. "Brecht wrote this as a way to speak out against a dictator and political party who believes in nationalism, white superiority, and doing whatever it took to make Germany great again. Here we are 73 years later facing similar elements the play deals with."

Adds Sullivan: "Thus, with taking on this project I was not only documenting the production of "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Aui, but, ideally, also providing an opportunity to get people thinking and talking about what is happening now."
