UW-Madison's Smith writes new book, 'Musings of an Old Man'

UW-Madison's Richard Smith is publishing his latest book, "Musings of an Old Man: Some Prose and Poetry to Ponder."

Musings of an Old Man book coverSmith is a professor emeritus with the School of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction and a recipient of a Distinguished Teaching Award. His major emphases of study were the development of reading comprehension and the development of positive attitudes toward reading. 

Smith is author or co-author of five college textbooks and more than 50 articles in professional journals. Since retirement, Smith has published two books.

This latest collection explores growing old, and ranges from humorous encounters with changing technology to the hardships of losing a lifelong partner.

“My musings range from the idiosyncrasies of the English language, to thoughts on growing old, to sentimental poetry, to observations of nature,” said Smith. “Some are serious, some are humorous and some are sad. Those emotions are all part of life, at least as I have lived it.” 

Smith's book is being published by Koehler Books and will be available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble as a hardcover, paperback or e-book on March 15.
